You Were Never Meant to Carry It Alone

You Were Never Meant to Carry It Alone

Numbers 11:10–17

Moses had reached his limit.

The Israelites were complaining again! This time they were upset about the food. Apparently, miraculous bread falling from heaven every morning had lost some of its appeal. God was providing manna, but the people wanted meat. Moses was caught between a frustrated nation and an angry God. Then he finally said what exhausted leaders eventually think: “I can’t carry all these people by myself! The load is far too heavy!” (Numbers 11:14, NLT). I appreciate Moses’ honesty. He did not tell God, “Things are going wonderfully. Ministry is such a blessing.” He essentially said, “Hey… I cannot do this anymore.”

Many of us have been there. We keep carrying responsibilities because we assume being needed means being responsible for everything. We convince ourselves it is easier to do it ourselves than explain it to someone else. Sometimes we even spiritualize our exhaustion. We call it dedication when everyone around us can clearly see we need a nap, a vacation and possibly someone to confiscate our phone.

God’s response to Moses is fascinating. He did not give Moses more strength to carry everything. He gave Moses more people. God told him to gather seventy elders and said, “They will help you carry the burden of the people so you won’t have to carry it alone” (Numbers 11:17, NLT).

That is not just a leadership principle. It is a kingdom principle. God never designed us to follow Jesus alone. We need people who pray with us, encourage us, challenge us, serve beside us and occasionally remind us that we are not nearly as indispensable as we think we are. Even Jesus built His earthly ministry around relationships with others. The early church also practiced shared life, prayer, generosity, service and ministry together.

Maybe strength does not always mean carrying more. Sometimes strength means admitting the load is too heavy. Look around. Who has God placed near you? Who could help carry what you have been trying to manage alone? Whose burden could you help carry?

We were never meant to impress God with how much we can handle. We were meant to become the body of Christ, depending on Him and carrying life together.
