# When God Leads You Into the Wilderness

Numbers 9:15-23

I like directions. I like schedules. I like knowing where I am going, how long it will take and preferably where we are stopping for espresso. I especially appreciate a good calendar invitation that quietly reassures me, “Here’s the plan.” Apparently, God does not always share my enthusiasm for detailed itineraries.

In Numbers 9, God led the Israelites through the wilderness with a cloud that rested over the Tabernacle. When the cloud moved, they moved. When the cloud stayed, they stayed. Sometimes it remained overnight. Sometimes it stayed for days. Sometimes it stayed for a month or longer. Imagine trying to plan your week around that. No weather app. No travel itinerary. No notification saying there is a 90 percent chance of wandering tomorrow.

*“At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped”* (Numbers 9:18, NLT).

That sounds wonderfully spiritual until you actually think about living it. You finally get everything organized in the tent. The kids are settled. You know where you put everything. You have located the coffee grinder. Life feels manageable again. Then somebody looks outside and yells, “Cloud’s moving!” Time to pack it all up.

Other times, you are ready to go. You are tired of the scenery. You have prayed for something new. You are convinced God should be moving you forward. You wake up, look outside and the cloud has not moved an inch.

That may be the harder part of following God. Sometimes God says go. Sometimes God says stay. Faith requires trusting Him with both.

**We often assume that progress means movement.** God reminds us that sometimes obedience means staying exactly where He has placed us until He says otherwise. Waiting is not necessarily wasted time. God can do important work in us while nothing around us seems to be changing.

The Israelites did not need to know the entire route. They simply needed to keep their eyes on God’s presence and obey His next instruction.

Maybe that is what you need today. Stop demanding the entire itinerary. If God is moving, follow Him. If God has you waiting, remain faithful. You do not need to know where the wilderness road ends when you know who is leading you through it.

**The safest place you can be is not where life is easiest, fastest or most predictable. It is wherever God’s presence is leading you today.**
