Proverbs 3:5-6
I like knowing where I am going. I want the address, the route, the estimated arrival time and preferably a little blue line showing me every turn between here and there. If my GPS says, “Proceed to the route,” I am fine. If it says, “Recalculating,” I immediately begin questioning every decision that brought me to this moment. Unfortunately, God does not always provide the little blue line.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust the Lord with all our heart instead of depending on our own understanding. That sounds great until God leads us somewhere we do not understand. Trusting God is much easier when His direction happens to match the route we already had planned. But sometimes it does not.
Sometimes the job does not work out. The relationship changes. The opportunity disappears. The prayer seems unanswered. The door we were certain God would open remains firmly closed. We look at what is happening and think, “God, this makes absolutely no sense.” That is where trust becomes more than something we say.
Trusting God does not mean pretending we understand what He is doing. It means believing He knows what He is doing even when we do not. There is a significant difference. I can trust God while still having questions. I can follow Him while still wishing I knew where we were going. Faith does not require me to see the entire map. It requires me to trust the One who does.
That is difficult because I really like my own understanding. I have plans. I have opinions. I have even prayed prayers that were basically detailed instructions explaining to God how He could resolve the situation. Apparently, I occasionally believe the Creator of the universe could benefit from my suggestions. Proverbs reminds us that our confidence is not supposed to be in our ability to figure everything out. Our confidence is in God.
Maybe you are in a season right now where the road does not make sense. You cannot see what God is doing, where He is leading or how any of this could possibly work together. Keep trusting.
You do not need the whole map to take the next faithful step. Seek God. Obey what He has already made clear. Keep walking with Him. The God who sees the road ahead is worthy of your trust, even when all you can see is the next step.
