James 1:22–25

Most of us have experienced one of those humbling moments. You leave the house feeling confident. Hair looks good, or at least I assume that is a real experience. Shirt is tucked in. You have smiled, waved and talked with several people before catching your reflection in a window and realizing your shirt has been buttoned wrong the entire time. Not slightly wrong either. The kind of wrong that makes it look like you got dressed during an earthquake.

Mirrors are brutally honest. They show us what is actually there, whether we appreciate the information or not. James says God’s Word works the same way.

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves” (James 1:22, NLT).

James describes someone who looks into a mirror, sees what needs attention, walks away and immediately forgets what he saw. Crazy right? Yet we often do exactly that with Scripture.

We read about forgiveness while feeding bitterness. We study generosity while gripping our possessions like someone is trying to steal our last chicken nugget. We hear a sermon about humility and think, “Several people in this room really needed to hear that today.”

Knowing what the Bible says is important, but knowledge alone does not change us. Scripture was not given simply to fill our notebooks, highlight our Bibles or help us win arguments. God gave us His Word to shape the way we live. The Bible reveals attitudes that need changing, habits that need surrendering and relationships that need repairing. God does not show us these things to embarrass us. He reveals them because He loves us too much to leave us unchanged.

James promises blessing to those who hear God’s Word and obey it. Obedience does not earn God’s love. It is our response to the love we have already received through Jesus.

Before closing your Bible, ask, “What does God want me to do with what I just read?” Then take one clear step of obedience. Forgive the person. Make the call. Confess the sin. Change the habit. Offer help.

The mirror has spoken. Do not walk away pretending you did not see anything.
